I know a lot of chefs say “fat = flavor,” but I think herbs and spices can impart enough flavor that you don’t even miss the fat. Turn heat down to medium then sprinkle in flour and cook for 1 minute. Meanwhile, heat a large, oven-safe skillet (11-3/4' minimum) over medium-high heat then add breakfast sausage and cauliflower and saute until cooked through. Last but not least, I love using spices like garlic and onion powder to punch up the flavors so they really sing. Preheat oven to temperature indicated on the bag of tater tots. I sub almond milk in a lot of my dishes in place of dairy milk, but feel free to use your favorite dairy or non-dairy milk. You could even use mozzarella, if you want a milder flavor cheese – you do you! I like to use sharp cheddar when I want that punched-up flavor, but sometimes I’ll use a mild cheddar and jack cheese blend. In a medium bowl, whisk together eggs, half and half, salt, pepper, and garlic and onion powder. My personal favorite (when I have time to prep) is my Healthy Breakfast Sausage, but I will absolutely use store-bought turkey sausage when I don’t have time (or motivation) to make my own breakfast sausage.Īnother way to lighten this casserole is to use reduced-fat shredded cheese. Where I knew I could lighten up my tater tot casserole without compromising on flavor? Subbing in turkey sausage instead of traditional pork sausage was an easy way substitute. Parents have been singing to their children for ages, all over the world. And in another study, mothers that sang to their children for 90 minutes in a group felt more closeness to their infants than mothers that talked and played but did not sing. One study of nearly 400 mothers in England found that singing to babies daily was associated with less postpartum depression and higher wellbeing and self-esteem. There is some evidence that singing to infants can help boost a parent's confidence (that superhero feeling I get). Mehr says that reflects his own experience as a parent, but as a researcher he thinks that kind of long-term study would be hard to do. "You can imagine that a parent who learns that this is the case and actually increases the amount of time that they spend, you could imagine all these follow-on effects, where the baby's easier to soothe, so the parent's more chilled out and not as stressed about being a parent, which is already a pretty stressful thing," he says. Mehr says the fact that babies respond especially well to lullabies brings up lots of ideas for future long-term research. But parents tend to sing more to babies than kids as they get older. Singing does seem to help older kids relax, too – as evidenced by my 8-year-old. They can tell you're really paying attention to them and responding to their emotions in real time. "The fact that you're singing a lullaby when the baby's upset, you're not doing some other thing like that – the baby can tell that you're doing only that," he says. He thinks the behaviors and actions involved when a parent sings to their child also may play a role. If a stranger came and started singing to your kid, it probably wouldn't have the same effect. He points out that doesn't explain everything, though. So there's something in the kind of DNA of lullaby that helps to calm infants." The babies found all the songs pretty relaxing, he says, "but when they're listening to these lullabies, even though they're totally unfamiliar and not in a language the baby understands, they relax more. His team did a study playing songs for infants in an unfamiliar language – some of the songs were lullabies, and some weren't. Still, there is just something about lullabies, says Sam Mehr, who studies the psychology of music at the University of Auckland. If you really don't want to sing, a backrub can have similar effects, she says. You can sing with any level of enthusiasm or skill, as long as it's slow tempo. But Fields says that is not a requirement for this to work. "They slept better, but they also showed a lot of the effects of decreased heart rate and respiration, better feeding, which probably explains why they had fewer days in the neonatal intensive care unit and their mothers' anxiety was reduced." "What they found was that the mothers' lullabies were more soothing to the infants," she says. Many of the studies on music and sleep are done with preterm infants in the NICU – including one which compared infants who heard Mozart to infants who heard their mother's lullabies plus a control group that didn't hear any music. With the preschoolers it was a 19% faster sleep onset, so of course the teachers loved that," she says. "With the toddlers there was a 35% faster sleep onset. The teachers played classical music at the beginning of naptime. She did a study of toddlers and preschoolers taking naps at the university nursery schools. ![]() 1/9/2024 0 Comments Screen lock time iphone![]() ![]() Nick's love of tinkering with computers extends beyond work. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Why can I get a positive pregnancy test then negative? Once hCG is successfully sandwiched, when you take a pregnancy test this triggers release of a dye-that’s the dark line on a pregnancy test that means you’re pregnant! The first line on a pregnancy test is a control test that simply makes sure the antibodies and dye are working. The first antibody gloms on to the alpha unit (“peanut butter”) and the second antibody gloms on to the beta unit (“the grape jelly”), which forms a chemical sandwich. To detect both parts of hCG, a pregnancy test loads the stick with two different antibodies-let’s call them “the bread slices”. Let’s call the alpha unit of hCG “the peanut butter” and the beta unit “the grape jelly”. HCG is a really big molecule that is made of two parts: the alpha part and the beta part. It sounds complicated, and the chemistry of it is, but if you’ve made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich before, then you’ll understand how this test works. This type of a test is a sandwich enzyme immunoassay. How does a home pregnancy test work?Ī home pregnancy test measures amount of hCG in your urine. To explain why this happens, this post will cover how a pregnancy test works, what the hook effect is, and what you can do. If you take a pregnancy test after about week five of pregnancy, you might experience a type of false negative called the hook effect. You’re sure that you’re pregnant because you recently had a positive pregnancy test, but now a few weeks later, you see a faint pregnancy test line or no line at all. False negative results can be stressful part of your initial steps in pregnancy. ![]() ![]() Journey to historic Georgetown to experience this new, American-themed venture from José Andrés. The great potty controversy received news coverage in both the Washington Post and the New York Times, where the female senators were reduced to raving perkily about their new facilities. Two additional stalls, an extra sink and more storage space were added in the fall of 2013, after several female senators raised the issue publicly. By 2013, with 20 women in the Senate, restroom traffic jams were commonplace, forcing some of the female senators to traipse to a first-floor restroom far from the chamber. The restroom closest to the Senate floor that was set aside for women senators had only two stalls. The question is, can he overcome, I think, the bad taste that former President Trump has intentionally put in voters' minds about him? But they were also very happy with his debate last night. The pool wasn’t the only Senate facility apparently stuck in the Dark Ages. Now, you could argue, did he try too hard? Was he kind of pushing back too much, causing problems on stage? He wanted to look authoritative, and he did. And, until now, he's been kind of an afterthought. He really should be a dominant character. He was someone that, really, he's - he has the most debate experience, the most White House experience of anyone on that stage. I will also say the other camp that was very happy last night, Mike Pence. And so I - the voters I have been talking to, I didn't hear the kinds of things that got her into that first-place spot. However, I do think that what she presented last night was something very appealing in a November election. Yes, there was no one happier in the spin room than the Haley supporters. So the second-place question, I think we will see when polling comes out whether DeSantis is still there, but it's really a question of how much they need to make up to get close to Donald Trump. If you were trying to get voters who are on the fence about Donald Trump or may be looking around, if a conviction isn't enough to get those people to say, I won't support him, why should I as a voter think that is happening? Why should I as a voter think that is disqualifying?Īnd then, as we said, finally, we came out of this with, I think, three candidates who did either reasonably well or did get good attention, Ramaswamy, Haley and DeSantis, but not one of them has been able to put together that never-Trump and sometimes-Trump coalition. The other thing, as Lisa pointed out in her piece, every single person raised their hand except for two when asked if they would support Donald Trump if he were convicted. I - what I saw last night was good news for Donald Trump, in that, one, Ron DeSantis did well enough, I think you're right, that he is still in the mix, but he got overshadowed by Ramaswamy.Īnd, remember, Ramaswamy is the candidate who's most aligned with Donald Trump, who will defend Donald Trump constantly, again, splitting up that vote with him. Those folks aren't going anywhere, another 20 percent who will never vote for Trump, and then whatever we have left here, somewhere around 50 percent, sitting in there who are saying, I like Trump.Īnd, right now, they're probably telling pollsters that they're voting for Trump, but they're open to other options. I think this race from the very beginning until now has kind of boiled down to these three key groups of Republican voters, about 30, 35 percent who will stay with Trump, no matter what. Well, and that's the challenge right there, that they have multiple non-Trump candidates to choose from. And these early states are going to matter. In Iowa, no one has a better organization at this point. ![]() One thing they have a lot of confidence in is their ground game. ![]() They do know that he still probably is the number two, but they're not sure what he's going where he's going to be in two weeks, three weeks. I think they were ready to be attacked and weren't attacked, and now they're figuring out what it means. I think what happened was a surprise to many in the DeSantis camp. However, that does conflict with the third thing that DeSantis supporters told me, which is, no one's been attacked more before this debate.Īnd that's just a sign that he still is the guy in the center. He has the best record, in fact, I was told by Chip Roy of Texas, of any governor in the country. ![]() They said the reason he wasn't attacked is because he has an incredible record. There's a different argument too that they made, though. One, some of them made the argument that he was the adult in the room. So, when you talk to DeSantis supporters and some in his campaign and super PAC, they told me three different things. This was the topic of a lot of my questions after the debate as well to my sources. ![]() ![]() We always prefer to stay in one of the Disney hotels.
